The firelight dances across skin, sending a warm glow over everything it touches.  I stop in the doorway, my eyes fixed on the man who lies face down in front of the fireplace.  Swallowing hard, I tear my eyes away long enough to close the door behind me.

He is relaxed, every muscle loose as his frame melts into the soft blanket beneath him.  His face is turned slightly away from me, just enough that I cannot see his expression.  If he were anyone else, I would think him unaware of my presence.  But he is who and what he is, and I know better.

Dropping my bag to the floor, I slowly take off my jacket, hanging it on the hook beside the door without looking away from him.  He shifts slightly, and the ripple of muscle beneath the skin sends a rush of need through me.  My eyes run lovingly over the gleaming skin, and I ache to taste it.  And I will.  Soon.

But not yet.  Now is for looking, and as I slowly approach him, I savor the opportunity to see him this way.

It's not the naked body that I am enjoying so much.  Although I am, of course.  How could I not be?  But the real attraction, the thing that makes my heart ache with joy, is the way he lies there, so still, so trusting, as I draw nearer.  There aren't many he allows close to him without the innate wariness, so deeply ingrained in him, causing an involuntary tension.

I treasure the fact that I am among those few that he does.

I take a final step, then stop, waiting for him to make the next move.  For a long moment, he continues to lie still, then he stirs.  Raising his head, he smiles at me.

"Welcome home, Chief," he says softly, and all the past weeks, all the time spent away from him, falls away as if it was nothing.  I am where I belong.  Near Jim.
